Should You Supply Drinks For A Party?

By Chris Carr

The reason MixYour Drink.com came into being, was to give people an avenue to find some fantastic cocktail recipes, advice and tips on their favourite beers and spirits. We set out to give people an online portal to help them when it came to the what, when why and how of drinks. A question we were asked recently by some friends thinking of having a party, was should they supply drinks for a party or ask their guests to bring their own? We decided to take a look at that question:

Our immediate question back to the friends, was well what type of party were they planning to hold, was it an engagement, weddings, birthday, or simply just several friends getting together for a few drinks?

There is a certain social expectation that some parties will be catered for.

Milestone Birthdays - Generally, are catered for on some level. Perhaps wine and beer would be provided to a certain amount: For an 18th or 21 st. some Spirits and beer could be supplied. There is the option to have BYO or to have a bar tab to a limit that is affordable. A lot of these options would depend on the actual location of the intended party.

A aged milestone birthday is generally catered for again with beer and spirits. Similarly an 18th or 21st birthday may also have some alcohol supplied by a set tab at the bar.

If at a private venue then the amount of liquor supplied is well controlled. Young guests often favour a variety of mixed drinks, which are more easily kept in check at a private function.

A friend and party rager - will almost always have an expectation of BYO.

Perhaps hosting a cocktail party may be an idea that appeals to you. If you have close friends of like minded activities to yourself, they may be interested in bringing a different bottle of spirits so that each guest has the opportunity to produce an exciting cocktail. If you are struggling for cocktail ideas, visit our drink recipe page, or buy a book on making amazing cocktails.

Your responsibilities at any party or dinner are to ensure that your guests are responsible with their drinking. Consider what their level of capabilities is and if any guest shows signs of perhaps being to inebriated, then perhaps then it may be time to offer a coffee as an alternative drink.

What ever you do with supplying or providing drinks for any party is to make sure that people are drinking responsibly at all times. Supplying drinks for a party really is your own choice, so never be affended or put out if you are asked to BYO. There is no better feeling then sharing your favourite drink with a friend.
