By Daphne Bowen

Before the New World was colonized by Europeans, it was occupied by a plethora of mighty nations which consisted of multiple tribes. Each of these groups of people had their own beliefs, culture and unique artistic style. Many of the descendants of these great people still carry carry on the crafting traditions of their ancestors, making it possible to purchase authentic Native American merchandise online.

On designated lands known as reservations, several of the tribes still live and operate as completely independent nations, following their own laws, religions and ways. Modern day artisans residing in and around those borders have dedicated their lives to keeping the practices of their ancestral craftsmen active. They utilize trade secrets and skills that have been passed down through the generations.

That to which The People found themselves most spiritually connected, like their religion, the stars, moon, sun, animals and all of nature, were most often represented in art. Each piece had a very special feel to it as they were hand crafted using almost exclusively natural products. They used items such as silver, gems, stones, shells, sand, clay, beads, wood, leather, bone, hides, feathers, quills and much more, quite frequently.

There are companies who will mass produce products based on the various styles of these tribes, to sell as representative pieces. These items generally tend to be manufactured by machines in great quantities and fabricated using synthetic materials like plastic, nylon and acrylic. Authentic works will always be crafted by hand utilizing traditional construction practices.

Websites selling souvenir type items may feature crafts such as dream catchers, bead work purses and bracelets, turquoise and silver jewelry, moccasins, drums and totem poles. That is largely because products like these are easily recognizable to the mass population. Posters, key rings, paintings, books and trinkets are often sold simply as commemorative pieces.

Sites specializing in authentic artisan productions are likely to offer a more elite line of crafts. This may include items like the whale bone and soapstone carvings by the Innuit and Yupik tribes of Alaska, or perhaps the mesmerizing kachina dolls fashioned by the talented Hopi people. The fine loom woven wool rugs of the Navajo are in high demand because no two of those beautiful creations are exactly the same they are of such amazing quality.

Hundreds of tribes produce so many incredible works of art in the form of clay pottery, woven baskets, beaded fabric, masks and musical instruments. Each one being a true treasure, created individually by hand. A determined shopper may even be able to purchase items made using the quills of porcupines, which were standard decoration before the discovery of beading.

Websites that primarily feature authentic items may offer specialized products that are harder to find on general markets. This might include pieces such as headdresses done in the many styles worn by both warriors and chieftains within all of the different tribes. Collectors of fine handiwork could also seek out treasured crafts like medicine wheels, hoop masks, baleen baskets, fetish carvings, or very detailed sand paintings.
