Pulp Painting Artwork: An Introduction

By George Johnson

Regular painting requires prior preparation. Pulp painting is no different. Careful preparation of the pulp is significantly important. It has the potential of determining the end result of the painting.

It is an art technique that uses the colored pulp as a medium in painting. The pulp is applied on a surface to create a colorful painting. Various sources of pulp include grass, reeds, bamboo, and cotton among others.

The choice of the plant fiber is an important step. The fiber is then mixed with water and beaten or blended until the fibers are well mixed to produce a fine mixture. The technique used to mix can produce different texture with one type of fiber.

The most preferred fiber to use is bamboo as it is usually easily available. It creates a pulp that is easy to control and less absorbent. Once the pulp is ready, it is colored with different colors ready to be used.

Each fiber tends to absorb color differently just as with textiles. The same red pigment will look different in the different fibers just as it would in different textiles. The varying texture and surface texture of each fiber also tend to produce a different color result.

You need to be very attentive when mixing the colors or else you will end up with a tone you did not expect. Once you are done mixing the colors on the pulps, keep the pulps separate. Do not allow them to mix the colors by keeping them together.

The technique used in these paintings allows the addition of colors. The colors are mixed optically to give a certain illusion. When you stand and view the painting close, you are able to see the different fibers and their colors separately. But when you view the painting from a distance, it gives a mixed perception.

Drawing a sketch of the painting you intend to create is important. It will guide you as you progress with the painting. You will also have a reference to help you as you paint since you normally start with the front and move backward.

This kind of artwork requires special experience. Unlike regular painting where one starts with painting the background, this one requires you start with the front and work towards painting the background.

The whole idea of the painting technique is to help you keep control over the outcome of the painting. When you start with painting the foreground, you avoid painting over a wet background. You, therefore, have control over how the painting ends up.

As you continue painting, ensure the pulp remains wet. To give an appearance of depth, several tones of one color are used. Each layer needs to be applied carefully to avoid messing the previous layer.

You may use a board on the background of the painting to strengthen it and allow it to hold the painting properly. You can use silicon as it is the best adhesive for this work. It is also recommended to clear out as much water as possible using a vacuum pump to quicken the drying process.

The entire piece depending on the size can take up to weeks to dry. Once it is dry you can remove it from the board and have a paper thin painting as your end result.
