Container Garden Ideas For Urbanites And Apartment Dwellers

By Ann Lewis

In case you are considering yourself as having little or no space at all for growing your fresh fruit, herbs and vegetables to last your family the whole summer, sit back and relax. You would be surprised the amount of food you can harvest from the smallest of your space. This is true even for those who dwell in high-rise apartments with no space than a balcony. From hanging pots to innovative vertical gardening ideas and easily accessible planters, this small space container garden ideas will make your homegrown sufficiently productive. It does not matter the small nature of your outdoor space.

You should do some research at your local nursery or on the internet to choose the plants you wish to grow to help you come up with some ideas. Try to use plants that complement each other and have the same basic needs for water, air and light. The fruits of your labor will be amazing.

Choosing your vessel is only limited by your imagination. You may opt for a traditional wooden planter or large plastic pots. But you may choose something a little more unconventional such as a yard sink, an old stock pot, buckets or even an old toilet. It all depends on the look you want and how much of a talking point you want your container to become. Most garden supply stores and nurseries sell a variety of vessels.

In my gardening experience, I have found numerous edibles lending themselves to this form of gardening. The list is endless, but following are some few to have you started: Tomatoes, Water melons and Winter squash- their vine naturally and happily grow vertically, only needing your supports, Pole beans and peas, Salad greens, Asian greens, kitchen herbs and strawberries- they thrive in a recycled pallet and Hanging planters.

But don't just stick to vegetables and herbs; why not add fruit trees too? Instead of using an evergreen tree, pot a fruit tree instead. There are many dwarf varieties available that work best in pots since with pots there is less soil therefore less nutrients to draw from. If you live in a year round warm climate citrus trees are perfect.

Other vessel gardening ideas for the spring are bowls full of sweet perfumed Iris. They contain beautifully formed blooms which range in color from blues, yellows, purples, deep brown and reds. Pansies and daisies are particularly good for an outdoor display of color at this time of year. These are also suited to a hanging vessel. A shallow vessel of crocuses can look stunning if tightly planted.

Remember that container yards dry out more quickly than traditional ones. Be diligent about watering your plants if you don't want your vessel gardening ideas to wither and die. Vessel gardens must be fertilized too. Keep a small notebook handy so you can write down the needs of your plant so you will always know when to water or feed. Keep an eye out for pests. If you find a vessel that has an infestation, isolate it immediately and treat it with a natural pesticide. You don't want harsh chemicals on fruits, vegetables or herbs. A good natural pesticide recipe is:
