Event Promotion And Live Event Production Company

By Sarah Reed

When it comes to producing concerts and other events, there are different ways in which to do so. In most cases, a live event production company takes care of most of the work. As such, this article provides information on the tools and techniques used to produce such an event.

Whether hosting a ballet, concert, modern dance, theatrical operatic or other production, there are a lot that goes into creating a successful event. For example, most require communications equipment, sound, transport, packaging, staging, special effects and other work. Most often, each of these areas are taken care of by different companies or individuals while others use a single production company which sets up all aspects of the event.

Live music and theater have a long history of sound and visual presentations. While video is more recent than sound, both are often required in live productions. Both technologies began with the first talking film, though sound has been around much longer than video presentations shown during concerts and laser light shows.

Sound reinforcement has also been around for quite some time. While sound amplification is the distribution of sound, amplification provides the high and low volumes associated with a professional audio system. A great example of one of the first sound amplification systems is that of a bull horn which first debuted at the Chicago World Fair in 1933.

Then, in the 1960s, Bill Graham assisted the historic Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco when there was a need for sound systems which could be interchanged quickly and easily. In fact, Graham also founded FM Productions in the early 1970s to provide light and touring systems to bands such as the Grateful Dead and others whom toured on a regular basis.

The production company and a number of San Francisco based musicians became embroiled in a heated debate over the best type of sound system available. For some, it was an array or split array of speakers while others believed horn loaded speakers provided more clarity and better highs and lows in the music. As a resolution, the Grateful Dead and others began providing the sound equipment for each performance.

Live production companies in business today have a lot more going for them than individual promoters of the past. For, most have specific policies and procedures which individuals setting up and taking down events must follow on a regular basis. In addition, the concept of artists providing sound equipment as well as musical instruments and other elements is now a standard practice when it comes to artists and bands of all sizes.

Bill Graham was a concert promoter from the 1960s until 1991 at which time a helicopter crash took the promoter's life. As a child, the promoter escaped the Nazi invasion in Germany when being sent to France. After which, the young boy became a foster child living in Bronx, New York.

After having graduated from high school, then college with a degree in business, a young Bill Graham relocated to San Francisco in the 1960s. Graham's first job as promoter was for a group of comics known as the San Francisco Mime Troupe. Later, Bill became involved in promoting live bands and large concerts.
