Notable Historical Water Color Artists

By Celia Hall

Water color artists have made significant contributions to both art and history with their masterpieces. Artists who favor this medium originate from all over the globe, spanning multiple time periods. Their personal style often reflects the tone of their time period and gives insight to their daily life. Many artists have dabbled in watercolors, but here are a few notable ones.

Albrecht Durer is famous for many contributions during the early 1500's to the subjects of theory, math, and art. He did not set out to be an artist, but instead used his art as a way of documenting the world around him. He eventually did decide to share his work with the world. His subjects were often of nature, such as animals and scenery. As his skills further developed, he began to focus on other mediums.

John James Audubon was an ornithologist and painter in the early 1800's. His love of birds gave him the interest to create many of his paintings focusing on nature. His art did more than appease the eye, it helped document natural history at the time. His work is a prime example of how art can document many other aspects of a time period.

Georgia O'Keeffe is one of the most famous female artists, especially in watercolor. O'Keeffe was born in the Midwest area of the United States. Growing up around that area created her love of nature as a subject. Her paintings appear so different because she paints them from a magnified perspective. This allows for details to be captured in a never before seen way.

An American painter from the mid 1900's named J. W. S. Cox gained much of his popularity from a new technique he created. This technique consisted of using watercolors on saturated paper, it was called wet on wet. This was able to create a more painting-like look versus the realism look of past artwork. Many of his subjects reflected his love of famous cities and their architecture.

John Pike is a famous American artist who has helped teach others about this medium. His impressive resume includes work with major corporation advertising, military historical documenting, and magazine cover illustrations. He published a book in the late 1970's that gave step by step instructions on how to paint with watercolors. He also founded an art school in New York in 1960.

Phil Dike is credited with creating a new trend in watercolor painting called the California Style. This was a bold and abstract style that was new to this medium. He brought his techniques with him to Walt Disney and helped create the art for many classic movies. He went on to teach this technique to other artists at various schools.

The best thing about all of these water color artists is the uniqueness of their work. They all used the watercolor medium, but because of various personal styles and techniques, the art all appears so different. Art makes a tremendous contribution to history, as well as many other facets of the our world. Without many of these artists, we would not know what we do about their time period and what was happening in it. All of the art created by these artists can be found in museums and art books.
