Learning How To Hold A Violin

By Annabelle Holman

A violin, also characterized as a fiddle, is a beautiful instrument that can also be very complex to a beginner. Many beginning students make the simple mistake of holding it incorrectly. The right technique is just as important as knowing the right note to play. There is a right way and a wrong way when it comes to knowing how to hold a violin.

The shoulder rest is actually a very important piece of equipment for the student just learning about the fiddle. It needs to be placed on the back of the instrument for added comfort.

There are many types of shoulder rests that exist that a beginner may purchase. Some may be expensive. One cheap option is to simply purchase a nylon sponge and attach it to the back of the instrument and left edge corner with a rubber band.

Now it's time to position the fiddle. It should be held in the left hand and placed on the left shoulder. Make sure to place it on the shoulder rest at the top. An individual's chin should be placed upon the chin rest, which is the base instrument top. This piece is usually black and shaped like an oval. It aids in making the fiddle easier to hold. There must be a secure fit between the instrument and ones shoulder. An individual should be able to secure the instrument and be hands free.

An individual's left hand is responsible for holding the instrument. It should be placed at the neck of the instrument. The left thumb is also important and must be placed to the left of the fingerboard. There needs to be at least a half an inch of space between the thumb and fingerboard. The thumb should be level with the height of the fingerboard.

One position that is truly difficult to perfect is that concerning the wrist position. Many beginners automatically rest their wrist on the violin's back, which is a big no-no. The wrist should not touch the instrument but be straight so that it can go up or down. This is important because the wrist needs to be able to play notes up and down the scale without being hindered.

The fiddle should always be parallel towards the ground and in front of the person playing the instrument. A person can choose to play sitting down or standing up. Many students get lazy and allow the instrument to point in a downwards direction. This is a bad habit to get into. Feet are to be evenly weighted and placed a shoulder's width apart. It is important to sit in an upright position at the edge of a seat without slouching if sitting down.

Following these helpful guidelines is very important for the individual that is serious about perfecting their craft. The more one plays, the more natural playing it becomes. The beautiful melodies that will follow will be well worth it.
