Technical Tips For Aspiring Wedding Photographers

By Vanessa Smith

Weddings are all about telling tales, and wedding photography is one way to capture these fleeting moments. In his quest to freeze these moments, the wedding photographer faces one essential challenge: to make his photographic gear respond as quickly as his eyes.

This is where mastery of gear comes in. In order for a photographer to create stunning and meaningful photographs, he needs to work hard to master his photographic gear so it works exactly the way he wants it to. For the budding wedding photographer, here are a few crucial things about your camera you should master. With constant practise, you're on your way to taking your photography to another level.

White Balance: your camera's white balance refers to how precise the colours appear on your photos. Your aim is to make the whites appear white, so that every other colour will follow suit. You may use the Auto White Balance setting, although if you want to further grasp how different lighting environments change your images, use Kelvin instead. Low Kelvin numbers (around 3,350) would produce cold, bluish photos. Higher ones, meanwhile, such as 5,260, tend to warm the colours. Play around these numbers to achieve accurate results.

Sharpness: aim to come up with tack-sharp photos unless you want to purposely blur to show action or movement. Using a tripod would help stabilise your camera, but this tends to blur people's movement along the way. Should you wish to freeze action, increase your ISO or lower your lens' opening.

JPEG or RAW: images captured through the RAW format contain more data, making them more flexible when post-processed. Because you're most likely going to print these wedding photos, use RAW instead of the compressed JPEG to guarantee maximum versatility.

Flash: most of the time, weddings are held in low-light areas. When boosting the ISO or widening your aperture doesn't do it, use an external flash unit as an alternative to compensate for the lack of light. Moreover, bounce flash is preferable over direct flash since the latter creates harsh shadows and unbalanced lighting. Purchase a good flash unit and a couple of reliable rechargeable batteries to make your shooting more convenient. You can also browse through works of seasoned wedding photographers and studios to further improve your very own craft.
