An Elvis Impersonator Appears On Many Stages

By Angel Dudley

You can see an Elvis impersonator at many venues in Memphis Tennessee. Born in Tupelo Mississippi, Elvis bought a mansion in Memphis for his mother and father to live in and enjoy. There have been rumors of his ghost being sighted walking through the rooms late at night. Other fans claim to see his ghost walking the grounds and especially around the gates that open to those grounds.

Others claim to have seen him at the black wrought iron gates, which have musical tones decorating them. He was a man who came from very humble beginnings and he would sometimes visit with his fans at those gates. When he passed away at the early age of 42, mourners surrounded the mansion and lined the streets for his funeral procession.

Numerous impersonators live and work in Memphis Tennessee where the mansion and a hotel named Heartbreak Hotel are located. There are many in Las Vegas too. Many television situation comedies have used one or more of them in an episode. Movies also use these lookalikes to make reference to the late great singer.

There are all kinds of jobs available for these imitators. The first was a 16 year old boy named Jim Smith. At an Elvis concert in Memphis he regularly jumped onto the stage and did an impersonation. He did not sing, just looked like the king and danced like him as well.

After the king passed away, impersonators started appearing all over. This singer and entertainer will never be forgotten. Grandmothers who grew up listening to his songs taught their daughters to be fans and the daughters taught their daughters. Generations brought new fans over the years.

Andy Kaufman was an actor on the popular television series, Taxi. He tried unsuccessfully at first, to imitate the King. Finally he developed an impressive act as an impersonator.

There is a little joke that makes the rounds from time to time. Presley once entered an Elvis look-alike contest held in a Memphis restaurant. The newspaper article that started it all, published the news that he came in third. It was a funny joke, however, some people took it to be the truth.

Hound Dog and Don't be Cruel were two of his earliest hit records. One song, done by another artist is Walking in Memphis. It tells the story of someone visiting the city and seeing the streets where Elvis walked. It tells of seeing his ghost late one night.

Many of the really good impersonators make a living at doing his act. They appear on stage or make personal appearances for a fee. The tribute artists put on concerts attracting crowds.

The impersonators are so prolifick that it is considered a separate branch of the entertainment industry. Contests to judge the Elvis impersonator are held routinely. In addition to his admirers there are comedians who take an act on the road performing a parody based on him and his life.
