Sourcing And Buying Moving Head Lights

By Walter Robinson

Most bars and night clubs will at some point install colored lighting on stages and dance floors. A relatively cheap and impressive way to improve a light set up is to buy and fit moving head lights. The range of colors and rotation options make these units very flexible and appealing to many owners.

Many variations of moving units are now offered for sale with many colors and patterns to choose from. This lighting can be used as a stand alone controlled only by sound but the majority of them will be connected to a DMX box to enable them to be remotely operated. After connecting them to the box they can be pre programmed into sequences or operated by a technician.

With so many variations on the market it is worth taking some time to think about what effects are needed. Many different combinations of lenses are used from 1 through to 16 and these can be simple one color beams or complex patterns. It is also possible to customize lighting with club logos or text to be projected onto a surface.

The cost of lighting can vary greatly depending on the size and materials used in construction. For as little as 200 dollars a light can be purchased and ready to use straight out of the box. A DMX unit will start from about 120 dollars and this gives the user more flexibility and control options.

The more expensive units which will have a metal cases and higher quality lenses will start at about two thousand dollars rising depending on complexity. A DMX controller for these high end lights will cost around five hundred dollars. Specialist cabling and plugs will also be required and it is always advisable to buy the best quality available for these more expensive units.

Second hand lighting is another option for those who do not wish to spend a lot of money on a lighting system. Big savings can be made by using pre owned units but it is essential to have everything checked out by an electrician before parting with any money. Many stores, auction houses and online sites offer used lighting so it is worth taking a look.

The best place to start when looking for lighting is at a specialist stage lighting store or disco supplies retailer. As well as having a great selection and the option of ordering direct from manufacturers these sellers can advise on the best set up for the customer. Also when buying from a reputable store the guarantees and after sales service will be provided.

When the head units and other items have been purchased it is time to think about who will fit them and where. The more complex set ups will require the services of an expert installer to ensure that they function correctly and operate in a safe manner. After the final installation and testing the units should be checked periodically and any faults repaired, units cleaned and bulbs changed when fading.
