There Are Important Benefits To Adult Dance Lessons Oklahoma Seniors Enroll In

By Virginia Rogers

If there is one thing that surprises many seniors about retirement, it's how bored they are. Not all of them are passionate about painting or gardening. Exercising is seen by some as a good idea for other people. Most of them grew up before the era of gym memberships and physical fitness instructors. A lot of them are intrigued about the idea of the adult dance lessons Oklahoma centers offer seniors though.

Unless you continue to move as you age, you may eventually lose strength and mobility. Dancing can counteract the effects of sitting on the couch all day. Your feet, thighs, and calves are exercised as you move, but you will get more out of dancing than just that. You are actually doing resistance training, with your body acting as the weight. Your endurance will improve as you take the classes.

Increased flexibility is another great benefit of dancing. You have probably noticed that your knees and hips are stiff when you get up after sitting for an extended period of time. Arthritis is a common complaint among seniors. As you dance however, you stretch and move and get your joints working. Prior to your lessons, you will be required to warm up. This will stretch your sides, back, shoulders, and neck along with the muscles in your legs.

Another common problem many seniors face is isolation. Once you retire and don't go to work everyday, you can lose touch with coworkers. You don't have much in common with the ones you do talk to occasionally. Contemporaries are aging as well and can't always get out to socialize. A dance class is a great place to meet new people. You already share an interest in dancing.

Dancing is a wonderful way to use all your muscles. You may notice, after you have been dancing for several weeks, that your body has taken on a more toned and healthy look. You might not be mistaken for twenty-five, but you will look great for the age you are. You will walk taller, and feel more self-confident.

If you've been concerned about your weight, but haven't done anything about it, you will probably be pleased when you step on the scale. Dancing is more than good exercise. It's a great way to burn calories and lose extra pounds. Once you start losing, you'll feel more energetic. You may want to form a walking club with some neighbors or join the gym after all.

The threat of Alzheimer's is never far from any senior's mind. The idea of losing your memory and becoming dependent on others can be terrifying. Dancing isn't a cure for the disease, but studies show it can improve memory. Dancers have to learn steps and movement specific to different kinds of dances. They have to remember them the next time they hit the floor.

Getting older can be a great adventure. You do have to work at it however. You must keep an open mind, try new things, stay active, and be grateful for every day.
