Picture frames are the edgings added onto pictures to offer protection, support, and enhancement. They are also added to make display a lot easier. Traditionally, these structures have always been made from wood. Wood is still the commonest material used in their construction even today even though other materials have been introduced. Some among the main materials currently gaining wide use include bronze, aluminum, silver, and various kinds of plastics such as polystyrene. New materials are being introduced because of a need for increased durability, beauty, and moldability among other properties, which may not be readily available in wood.

There are too many colors in which these products are made to imagine. Any theme or decor may be matched by choosing the right color. Another variable is the texture. However, gilding is common feature on most materials especially wood.

Pictures inside a frame are protected using picture framing glass or acrylic glass. Examples of acrylic glass used are Plexiglas and acrylate. Panes may however not be necessary in situations where a piece of art is very durable. Panes also keep artworks clean besides keeping them durable and protecting them from damage. Paper artworks are covered more by panes than oil paintings.

Artworks that cost very expensively are the exceptions for which glass can be used on artwork made from paper. It is common practice to treat framing glass with anti-reflective coatings so that they become invisible under suitable lighting conditions. UV filtering properties may also be incorporated into framing glass if the room a piece of art is placed in is lit using UV light. UV light has properties that may be destructive to some papers.

There are many ways in which the back of the framed artwork is treated. Some among the commonly used materials are backing paper and foam-core boards, which provide support. The backing material also helps to keep insects and dust out. Dust particles can ruin the content of the structure while insects can chew on pictures or artworks. Backing materials vary in cost with some being very cheap while others are very expensive.

Most frames have a square or rectangular shape. However, some relatively other common shapes include oval and circles. The latter shapes are more of social event and family things. In commercial and public environments, rectangular and squire shapes are preferred. Scoop design is employed in pictures placed around corners.

Picture frames also come in several styles. The most common and which is also the easiest to construct is the L style frame. Another design is the photo cube. Photo cubes are special in design and are usually constructed to hold several pictures. The pictures may represent a timeline of events, a family, or a vacation. Other styles are box and clip frames, shadow boxes, and digital photo frame. Digital photo frame is the latest invention in this line of products.
