The Do's & Don'ts Of Art

By Jennifer Marie Anderson

Art is one of the broadest fields that people can invest time in. There are many who enjoy writing, crafting stories that they would like to read themselves. Others may be focused on more visual media, along the lines of painting or web design. Whatever the case may be, art matters and there are certain ways to go about creating it. For those who would like to make careers out of this, in the future, please be mindful of these do's and don'ts.

Do set your sights on your own interests. I think that most people will agree with the fact that art should be enjoyed. You should focus on what interests you the most, which can vary from someone else's perspective. If you are into web design, while your peers may be into creative writing, it doesn't say anything negative about either party. It's simply a matter of what you enjoy, so focus on that and you'll be able to benefit from art to a greater degree.

Don't emulate what others do. Art is seen as an endeavor that is done from the heart, as opposed to the brain. When you create anything from nothing, chances are that you have felt something while doing so, which is something that translate to others when they view your creations. As a result, you cannot simply copy the work that others have created in the past. By doing so, you're not being true to your interests, as discussed earlier.

Do seek knowledge, no matter what. It's hard to imagine why anyone would stop looking for knowledge, regardless of the field they'd like to work in. This is especially true for artists, as they may learn new things they never were aware of before. When you actively stop looking for new things to learn about, in your particular interest, you start to lose a sense of wonder that comes with your work. With that said, you should never overlook the importance of seeking knowledge.

Don't be afraid to accept critique. One of the difficult aspects of art is understanding where your faults lie. You may not be able to recognize them, at least early on, but those who review your work may have an easier time of doing so. When this happens, you should accept the words given to you, as they can serve as some of the best building blocks to help you become a better worker. Failure to do so may hinder your growth in any artistic field.
