Satellite Television Reviews - Is Directv Or Dish Network's Service Better?

By Brian Stevens

On the surface the two major satellite television providers - Dish Network and Directv - look fairly similar. But if you take a closer look you will find that there are significant differences. Here is what they are..

Programming

DIRECTV provides 265 satellite television channels, while DISH Network features 320 channels. Dish Network offers 320 program channels, DirecTV has 265 channels. The satellite channels from both of these providers include a selection of categories including motion pictures, TV news, sporting events, variety shows, network programming, weather, reality programs, special interest programs and international programming.

DIRECTV rates begin at $29.99 per month for 150 television channels, including local channels - ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, together with the CW channel. Program fees for Dish Network begin at $24.95 for 190 television channels including your local television channels such as NBC, CBS, FOX, along with ABC.

DIRECTV And DISH Network Movies Service

The two providers include 31 movie channels from HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, plus Starz. Package prices start at $13 per month for Showtime Cinemax, and Starz, and go up to $16 monthly for HBO.

Streaming Video Service

Streaming videos are the latest technological advance in satellite TV programming. With streaming video service you can watch movies and TV shows on your TV, your computer, your cell phone, and your laptop. Dish Network offers access to more than 25,000 streaming videos, while DirecTV offers more than 10,000 streaming video.

Pay-Per-View Services

With pay-per-view you'll have a recently released movie sent to your receiver so can view a movie without needing to visit a video store to have it. DIRECTV offers 60 movies each month, as well as sports activities plus special events, with fees beginning at $3.99 for each video. For just $3.99 you are able to rent a movie from DISH Network, which offers 75 movies a month.

DIRECTV And DISH Network Music Services

With DIRECTV you will get 9 Sonic Tap music channels together with 56 XM satellite radio channels. With DISH Network you can get 64 SiriusXM satellite radio stations plus 52 music channels. Both company's music channels are commercial free and are broadcast in digital audio for CD quality sound.

DIRECTV and DISH Network Equipment

DIRECTV delivers a free satellite TV system in as many as 4 rooms of your house plus free installation of that system once you purchase their service, while DISH Network gives a totally free satellite system installed in up to 6 rooms in your home after you purchase their service. The two companies provide you the option of upgrading your receivers to an HD receiver for high-def reception, a DVR receiver so that you can record your TV shows, or a combination HD/DVR receiver for the best of both worlds.

DIRECTV and DISH Network Customer Support

When you experience problems with your satellite television system, or just have questions about using it, the two companies have a 24-hour toll-free hotline as well as an web based customer support feature so you can get help when it's needed.

In Conclusion

There is little difference in quality between DIRECTV's satellite television equipnent and DISH Network's equipment, however ,, personally, I find that DISH Network's program guide is a lot easier to use, and their remote is much more convenient to use.

As far as the programs offered by the two service providers, Dish Network has got the most TV channels, the most variety, the most music channels, plus the most pay-per-view movies and events. DIRECTV has the most sports programming which includes the popular NFL Sunday Ticket.

DIRECTV features 160 HD channels, while DISH Network offers 200 hi-def channels.

If you want the best variety, the most high-def programming, as well as the most pay-per-view movies and events for the best price, then DISH Network will be your best choice. If sports is your thing, then you will want to purchase DIRECTV.
